Professional Consultation and Coaching
I'm a psychotherapist in private practice in Alabama, so all of my therapeutic and clinical services are for AL residents.
What I offer nationwide is professional consultation and parent coaching (PCC) for Adoptive Families, pre and post adoption.
This service consists of getting to know your family and building a profile that includes your adopted child's history and current struggles, your family's structure and lifestyle, and your presenting concerns and goals. Then, we'd tailor our sessions to helping you address those issues and working towards those goals. This includes may include psychoeducation, strategies discussions, resources identification, and more. I work primarily with the parents, but occasionally include the adopted child (and other children) as appropriate. I've found the most productive and effective interventions during the first 1-2 years after an adoption are led by the parents with the support of a good coach. With the changes and difficulties of a new life in a new environment for these kids, individual therapy right off the bat can sometimes be overwhelming, counter-productive, and can even hinder the attachment process that is so important in those first 1-2 years. This doesn't mean I don't support therapy for recent adoptees, as a therapist I value that resource. But in my work with adoptive and foster families over the past close to 20 years, my experience has taught me that prioritizing parent-led support is what tends to produce the most beneficial outcomes.
My PCC session fee is $100 per session (50-60 minutes) and I require at least 2 sessions a month for at least 2 months. This is because too much time between sessions leaves lots of room for missed opportunities and creates the potential for misapplication of strategies. Consistency is so important and without a fairly frequent check-in, we don't build the habits needed to meet our goals. You can create an account via my web-portal and begin the process when and if you'd like to pursue services.
If you aren't sure if this is right for you, we can schedule a 15-minute phone call first to discuss and make sure I'd be a good fit for your needs. You can also discuss services and more with me using the contact form below or sending me an email to seth@ofaros.com.
